Dave Rose, a tireless worker, gifted motivator, and strong strategist, has guided BYU to back-to-back Mountain West Conference Championships in his second and third years as head coach. Since Rose has been head coach, BYU has three consecutive 20-win seasons, and he has been awarded Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year two years.
He has 23 years of coaching experience, including 8 seasons as Steve Cleveland’s lead assistant and 10 seasons as a head coach at the junior college and high school levels. Rose compiled a 167-57 record in seven seasons as head coach at Dixie State College while guiding six of his seven teams to national top-20 rankings, including a ranking as high as No. 2, and three conference titles. His peers honored him as the 1993 Scenic West Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. While at Dixie, Rose coached three NJCAA All-Americans as well as longtime NBA player Keon Clark.
Since coming to Provo in 1997, Rose has played a vital role as BYU’s associate head coach for eight years and head coach for the last three in rebuilding BYU’s program from an inherited 1-25 team into a regular NCAA tournament participant and 20-game winner. BYU has qualified for postseason play seven of the past eight seasons, including four NCAA bids, while claiming three MWC titles. Rose has been nationally recognized as the top assistant in the Mountain West Conference (Street&Smith’s 2004–05 College Basketball Preview) and as one of the top 25 college basketball recruiters (2004 Rivals.com). While his work has caught the attention of those outside of BYU’s program, his most loyal following comes from those who have been on the inside.
