Program Costs
"The BGS program allowed me to take classes at home, at my own pace. I could take one class at a time so the cost was affordable. I was able to be home with my kids and I was able to show them—by example—that education is important."
— Suzanne, Midvale, UT

Financial Assistance
- BGS Tuition Assistance
Through the generous donations to BYU's Division of Continuing Education, partial-tuition financial assistance is available to formally admitted BGS students. Awards are based primarily on demonstrated financial need, and students must be in good academic standing. Additional funds have been set aside for single parents, male or female, with dependent children living at home.
BGS financial assistance can be applied toward BYU Independent Study, Evening Classes, or Salt Lake Center course tuition. Awards are made six times a year. Application forms and deadlines for submission will be available to formally admitted BGS students upon request.
- Federal Financial Aid (Title IV)
BGS students may be eligible for Federal Pell Grants for up to half-time enrollment (12 credit hours per academic year). For eligible students, the Pell Grant amounts can vary from $200 to $2,155 per academic year. Federal Stafford Loans may be available for BGS students who are enrolled at least half-time (12 credit hours per academic year). The amount of the loans cannot exceed the cost of half-time tuition, fees, and books minus all grants, scholarships, or other financial aid. BGS students are not eligible for Academic Competitiveness Grants (ACGs) or for National Science and Math Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grants. The terms and conditions under which BGS students may be eligible for federal financial aid are found at http://saas.byu.edu/depts/finaid/distancebgs.aspx. For further information, contact Student Services, D-155 ASB, Provo, UT 84602; 801-422-4104.
- Veterans Education Benefits
The BGS program is approved for payment of veterans’ education benefits. Effective
December 24, 1974, all independent study enrollees are entitled to tuition
reimbursement only. They cannot receive an allowance for dependents.
Veterans and armed forces personnel who desire to use their entitlement
for enrollment in the BGS program should contact their local VA benefits
office for clearance and submit a copy of the approval to the BYU VA
Office, A-41 ASB, Provo, UT 84602; 801-422-2768. The BGS program is also available
to Reservists and National Guard personnel through the VA Chapter “1606/1607”
